The Kukui Nut is Hawaii’s state tree and it's symbolic of Hawaiians reverence for, and utilization of all plants.
Most famously, the oil from the nut was used as a source of light. It was also valued for tanning hides and for treating skin diseases. Kukui oil shone, preserved, and water-proofed other various woods. When mixed with charcoal it created a paint base for the canoes. The nuts are still popularly used for making leis and jewelry.
Medicinally, when eaten raw, the nuts have a dynamic purgative effect. However, when cooked they're delicious. Roasted, mashed, mixed with sea salt, chili peppers, and served with chunks of raw fish, they are the basis of the "national" the dish, inamona poke.

"We have looked forward to this special Tree House for over a year! It is all we dreamed it would be! The solitude of the jungle (we even heard a Tarzan calling on the rope swing at the waterfall!) the rustle of the river and water falling - the coolness of the air coming through the screens - the rocking 'tree tops' when the wind blows (Rock-a- bye-Baby) -all of this has added up to an unforgettable experience."

"When I first saw this gorgeous waterfall and read about the Tree House in the Smithsonian magazine, I thought it couldn't really be this beautiful. - But it is!"

"Yippee! Starting Chinese New Year of the Rabbit; how lucky for us to get the "Tree House" experience. It rained all night but we were toasty and dry.
"This morning the fresh-washed air was clear & exceptionally gorgeous. I stumbled onto interesting fruit and sweet smelling flowers at almost every turn. We've been visited by one puppy, 4 cats, 1 storm-trooper spider & a handful of geckos. It's been an unforgettable time. I say this place is totally epic! Everyone should see this once."

"May all be blessed with the magic of these great-great-grand- fathers, these mediums between heaven and earth. Thank you, this tree, this Tree House, this Valley, this Peace. If only every- one could open their hearts & hear what the trees have to say. We shall protect this sacredness.
I fell in love with life here 4 ever."

"We don't know who lost paradise, but Linda found it and we're so glad she shared it with us.
"We take with us the many small experiences that add-up to one big miracle: more stars than sky, a family of wild horses, a mountain man in a loin cloth, soft black sand that embraces your skin, a tree house that rocks us to sleep with the lulla- bye of a rushing stream...
"Thank you, Linda, for helping us discover an brand new world in an ancient valley! You are the angel at heaven's gate."

"Thank you for sharing your paradise with us. It's our honeymoon and we could not have created a more perfect setting. From the waterfalls, the orchids, the gardenia 'trees', the moonlight & bright stars through the skylights, the heavy rain on the roof with sun- shine suddenly glistening the leaves, leaves that sing like birds in the sighing breeze.
"We were blessed crossing the threshold."

"As of today, we've shared 24-yrs of adventures together - however, these last 24 hours have wiggled their way to near the top of our list. We made a favorite meal for dinner to celebrate the safe passage through the years, and now it will always have more meaning.
"The tree house is everything and nothing like we expected, and far too short a journey into peace and solitude."

"Fifty years ago today my bride & I spent our honeymoon in a tent on the ground in beautiful Yosemite Valley. Today, we've moved up in the world considerably, - actually - up a tree, to this great Tree House in a jungle world that you've helped create with your plantings of ginger and impatiens - a true Shangra-la.
"If man (or in this case woman) can put the finishing touches on one of Our Lord's earthly creations - it is an easy step in imagination to realize His prepared paradise, that awaits in Heavenliness, on our next move up, where hopefully we shall see you again."

"Our 5th Anniversary! (But only our 2nd together!)
Even the weeds here look like ornamentals. Much fun watching the little lizards eat the moths on the screens - fast little suckers!
Made a nice pasta dinner. (It's my vacation and I feel like cooking?) And now, a hike back to the beautiful black sand beach.
"I WANT A TREE HOUSE."
